Understanding the IELTS Test
IELTS has a clear structure, scoring system, and set of rules. Understanding how the test works will help you choose the right course and prepare with confidence.
What is IELTS?
IELTS is one of the most widely recognised English tests in the world. It is owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge University Press and Assessment. The test is accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities in more than 140 countries.
Two Versions
There are two versions of IELTS. Academic is for students who want to enter undergraduate or postgraduate programmes. General Training is for people who want to work, migrate, or complete non-academic training in an English-speaking country.
What the Test Includes
IELTS tests four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each skill receives a separate band score. These four scores are then averaged to give your overall band score.
IELTS Scores
IELTS uses a band scale from 1 to 9, with whole and half band scores. Many universities ask for an overall score between 6.0 and 7.0. Immigration requirements depend on the country and visa type, so always check the official rules before applying.
How Long is it Valid?
An IELTS certificate is valid for two years from the test date. After two years, most institutions and authorities consider the score out of date. If you need a current score, you must take the exam again.
Where to Take the Test
IELTS is available at approved test centres around the world. You can take the test on paper or on computer, depending on what your chosen centre offers. Visit the official IELTS website to find a test centre and book your exam.
What your IELTS preparation course focuses on
IELTS scores are based on clear marking criteria for each part of the test. Our course helps you understand these criteria so you can show your best English in every section.
Lessons cover the full test: Listening, Reading, Writing Task 1, Writing Task 2, and the Speaking interview. You learn how to organise your writing, understand question types, manage your time, and give clear answers that match the IELTS band descriptors.
Your study plan is based on your current level, your target band score, and your exam date. You can choose flexible 1 to 1 lessons or join a small group course with two scheduled classes each week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a certain level before starting an IELTS course?
Yes. IELTS preparation is suitable from B1 level. If your level is below B1, we recommend starting with General English until you are ready for exam training. If you are not sure of your level, take our free level test and we will guide you.
How long will it take to reach my target band score?
It depends on your current level and your target score. As a general guide, moving up one full band score usually takes around 200 hours of study. After your free consultation, we will give you a clear plan based on your goals.
Can I study only one skill if that is what I need?
Yes. Our Specialist Skill Modules let you focus on one skill in a 10‑lesson course. You can choose Speaking, Writing, Reading, or Listening. This is useful if your general English is strong but one skill needs extra work.
What materials will I use in my lessons?
You will use authentic IELTS practice materials and real past papers. You do not need to buy any extra textbooks or resources.
